Pre-MOT checklist

Ten straightforward checks to help you arrive prepared. This is not a mechanical inspection and cannot guarantee a pass.

• Lights

  Check that the exterior lights work and lenses are not badly damaged.

• Tyres

  Look for obvious damage and check tread across each tyre. Ask a professional if unsure.

• Windscreen and visibility

  Clear anything that obstructs the driver’s view and note significant chips or cracks.

• Wipers and washers

  Make sure the wipers clear the screen and the washers contain fluid and spray properly.

• Registration plates

  Check both plates are present, secure, clean and easy to read.

• Mirrors

  Make sure required mirrors are secure and provide a clear view.

• Seatbelts

  Check belts fasten, release and retract, without obvious damage.

• Warning lights

  Look for warning lights that remain on after the engine starts. Ask a garage if you are unsure.

• Horn

  Check it works and gives a clear, continuous sound.

• Fuel and fluid leaks

  Look beneath the parked vehicle for obvious leaks. Do not touch unidentified fluids.
